Planning ahead should really be the first thing you do before you start house training a puppy, because it will have a big impact to the transition for your new puppy from his happy and playful home to his new and unrecognizable surroundings. A young pup can suffer separation anxiety when his mother and littermates suddenly disappear, and he is thrust into an entirely new environment with completely alien smells and faces to get used to.

Fully grown dogs are not immune to bouts of anxiety caused by seemingly needless alterations to their living environment. Don’t forget your dog will need lots of reassurance when you take him away from his old home; he just sees a new and quite worrying place with none of his friends.

If you can fit it in, try to get to know your new puppy before he moves in. He will already know you this way when he moves in with you. When you start out discovering, train puppy your training program will be more effective as he’s more comfortable with you from the start. I appreciate this is not always possible so, you could ask the old owner for something from the dog’s bed, like maybe a piece of clothing that he’s slept on, or anything that will help the dog adjust to his new surroundings and survive the feeling of having nothing familiar in his life.

The perfect time to bring your new dog home is when you will be available to set aside a block of time to spend with him. During the holidays is ideal – providing of course you’re at home and not on vacation. Don’t bring a new dog home and then pack him off to a boarding kennel while you take a three-week cruise. You need to have at least a couple of days at home and help the newcomer get over his homesickness blues.

As humans, we prepare, decorate and equip the home for a new baby and fill the home with everything we think the baby will need for a happy and healthy start, training a puppy needs to be given the attention to detail. The new dog owner should be organizing his or her home for the puppy’s arrival.
